Florence Transportation System Plan Update - Open House and Workshop #3Virtual Workshop

Preferred Pedestrian Alternatives

This room identifies the preferred alternatives selected by the project team to address gaps and deficiencies in the pedestrian system, including sidewalks, crosswalks, and multi-use paths. The preferred pedestrian alternatives are shown in the exhibits to the right. Please click the links and use the comment boxes to provide feedback on the alternatives, including the high priority alternatives shown below.

Sidewalks

Sidewalks are the primary building block of the pedestrian system. They provide an important means of mobility for walkers as well as people with disabilities, families with strollers, and others who may not be able to travel on an unimproved surface. The high priority sidewalk alternatives are shown below.

  • P1: US 101 (37th St to UGB) - Complete sidewalks on both sides of the street
  • P3: OR 126 (US 101 to N Fork Rd) - Construct sidewalks on both sides of the street from Spruce Street to Tamarack Street and a multi-use path on the north side from Tamarack Street to N Fork Road
  • P5: Munsel Lake Rd (US 101 to Spruce St) - Construct sidewalks with landscape strips on one side of the street and a multi-use path on the other side of the street
  • P16: 2nd St (US 101 to Harbor St) - Fill in sidewalk gaps on both sides of the street within Old Town
  • P20: 35th St (Rhododendron Dr to Kingwood St) - Construct sidewalks on both sides of the street
  • P21: 35th St (Kingwood St to Oak St) - Fill in sidewalk gaps on both sides of the street
  • P22: 35th St (Oak St to US 101) - Fill in sidewalk gaps on both sides of the street
  • P35: Oak St (27th St to 35th St) - Construct sidewalk on the east side of the street
  • P45: Laurel St-Old Town Wy (US 101 to Maple St) - Fill in sidewalk gaps on both sides of the street

Crosswalks

Crosswalks enable people to safely cross streets, railroad tracks, and other transportation facilities. Planning for appropriate crosswalks requires the community to balance vehicular mobility needs with providing crossing locations along the desired routes of pedestrians. The high priority crosswalk alternatives are shown below.

  • C1: US 101 - Install enhanced crossing treatments on US 101 at 46th St and 42nd St
  • C5: Munsel Lake Rd - Install enhanced crossing treatments on Munsel Lake Rd at Munsel Landing County Park and at Ocean Dunes Dr
  • C9: Oak St - Install enhanced crossing treatments at 35th St, 27th St, and 21st St; install second crosswalk and school crosswalk signs at 30th St
  • C12: Old Town - Install marked crosswalks with curb extensions on 2nd St at Nopal St, Oak St, and Harbor St; install midblock crossings at Bay St and the boardwalk

Multi-use Paths

Multi-use paths are facilities that serve both pedestrians and bicyclists. They can be constructed adjacent to streets where topography, right-of-way, or other issues preclude construction of sidewalks and bike facilities (i.e., side path) or they can be constructed away from the street within their own right-of-way. The high priority multi-use path alternatives are shown below.

  • P4: Heceta Beach Rd (US 101 to Rhododendron Dr) - Construct multi-use path on one side of the street (include landscape strip as feasible)
  • P6: Munsel Lake Rd (Spruce St to Ocean Dunes Dr) - Construct multi-use path on one side of the street (include landscape strip as feasible)
  • P7: Munsel Lake Rd (Ocean Dunes Dr to N Fork Rd) - Construct multi-use path on one side of the street (include landscape strip as feasible)
  • P8: N Fork Rd (OR 126 to Munsel Lake Rd) - Construct multi-use path on one side of the street (include landscape strip as feasible)
  • P13: Rhododendron Dr (9th St to Wild Winds St) - Construct multi-use path on one side of the street (include landscape strip as feasible)
  • P14: Rhododendron Dr (Wild Winds St to 35th St) - Construct multi-use path on one side of the street (include landscape strip as feasible)
  • P15: Rhododendron Dr (35th St to Heceta Beach Rd) - Construct multi-use path on one side of the street (include landscape strip as feasible)
  • MU1: Munsel Creek Multi-use Path - Install and/or improve the segments of the Munsel Creek Trail between Quince Street and 16th Street and between 25th Street and 29th Street. Extend the path from the Munsel Lake Greenway to Munsel Lake Road.
  • MU2: Estuary Trail - Install a multi-use path from the Boardwalk in Old Town to south end of Munsel Creek Trail.
