Pedestrian Connectivity
Overview
Pedestrian facilities in Tumalo currently consist of curbed sidewalks in the downtown core area on Cook Avenue and some surrounding roads (See Exhibits to the right). As the Tumalo core area continues to extend past Cook Avenue with on-going growth of businesses, improving pedestrian facilities in Tumalo will promote an active, safe, and livable community center
The following gaps are identified as priorities for the improvement of pedestrian facilities in Tumalo:
Bruce Avenue
As more businesses continue to grow in Tumalo, Bruce Avenue will likely transition to a more developed business area like Cook Avenue. For this reason, building pedestrian facilities on Bruce Avenue and connecting it to the surrounding sidewalk network will accommodate increased foot traffic.
Bruce Avenue connects to the back side of Tumalo Community School at 4th Street and would provide an additional connection via the forthcoming bike/ped underpass at U.S. 20/4th Street.
Cook Avenue
Cook Avenue from 4th Street to 2nd Street has been identified as a current gap in the sidewalk network. Continuing sidewalks north of 4th Street would provide a safer pedestrian connection to the Tumalo Community School, the popular river takeout, and residents north of 4th Street.
4th Street to Fitness Trail
A connection between the forthcoming bike/ped underpass at U.S. 20/ 4th Street and the Fit Trail Park next to the Tumalo Community School would provide additional access for residents who frequent the Fit Trail.
Wharton Avenue
Based on input from public events and the online StoryMap, Wharton Avenue is identified as a roadway in need of sidewalks or a multi-use path to accommodate future development in Tumalo.
Like Bruce Avenue, Wharton Avenue will likely see an increased need for pedestrian infrastructure as Tumalo’s main business area continues to grow and expand past Cook Avenue.
Tumalo Walking Loop
There is support from local residents for a formalized 1-2 mile walking loop through Tumalo that would promote physical fitness for residents of all ages.
With the construction of the forthcoming bike/ ped underpass at 4th Street and the roundabout at U.S. 20/Cook Avenue, there are opportunities to incorporate the new infrastructure into a walking loop identified by wayfinding signage.
A connection to Tumalo State Park from the Tumalo downtown core area has also been proposed as a desirable connection for residents.
Examples of potential walking loop routes are shown in Exhibits to the right. Ultimately, routes would be determined by the community.
Pedestrian Connectivity Recommendations
• Sidewalk on both sides of Bruce Avenue
• Walkway/ multi-use path on west side of Wharton Avenue
• Continue sidewalks north of 4th Street to 2nd Street on both sides of Cook Avenue
• Wayfinding for a walking loop in Tumalo
• Consider opportunities to develop a trail from Tumalo to Tumalo State Park (though much of the trail would be outside of the Tumalo Unincorporated Community boundaries)
A concept map with these recommendations is shown in Exhibits to the right.
Feedback for the Pedestrian Connectivity Concepts will be collected in the final room, Feedback and Next Steps.
