Route 1 Corridor StudyVirtual Workshop

Existing Conditions

In this room, you can learn about how Route 1 operates today.

The first exhibit (Existing Conditions - Intersection Safety) summarizes the findings for a crash analysis conducted on the Route 1 Corridor. This study evaluated crashes that occurred between January 1, 2014, and December 31, 2018. Key findings found in the crash patterns include:

  • Over 40 percent of the reported crashes were rear-end collisions. Approximately 70 percent of these collisions were property-damage-only.
  • Approximately one-third of reported crashes – 34 percent – involved injuries and/or fatalities.
  • Two fatal crashes occurred on this corridor as the result of an angle collision and a fixed object – off road crash.

The second exhibit (Existing Conditions - Intersection Operations) shows the overall intersection operational results of the existing traffic operations analysis for the weekday a.m. and weekday p.m. peak hours. The weekday a.m. and weekday p.m. peak hours were found to occur from 6:45 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., respectively. Presently, all intersections currently operate at a Level-of-Service (LOS) D or better except for:

  • Route 1/Lad Land Drive (LOS F in p.m. peak)
  • Route 1/Guinea Station Road (LOS F in a.m. and p.m. peaks)
  • Route 1/North Roxbury Mill Road (LOS E in the a.m. peak).

The third exhibit (Year 2030 Conditions - Intersection Operations) presents the overall intersection operational results for the traffic operations in year 2030 for the weekday a.m. and weekday p.m. peak hours. This future year analysis considers regional growth in the area as well as approved land development projects and roadway design projects. The study intersections that are expected to experience LOS E or F with the additional traffic demands include:

  • Route 1/Commonwealth Drive (LOS E in the p.m. peak)
  • Route 1/Lad Land Drive (LOS E in the a.m. peak, LOS F in the p.m. peak)
  • Route 1/Massaponax Church Road (LOS F in the a.m. and p.m. peaks)
  • Route 1/Guinea Station Road (LOS F in the a.m. and p.m. peaks)
  • Route 1/Hickory Ridge Road (LOS F in the a.m. and p.m. peaks)
  • Route 1/North Roxbury Mill Road (LOS F in the a.m. and p.m. peaks)
  • Route 1/North Point Drive/Larkinchew Road (LOS E in the a.m. peak, LOS F in the p.m. peak)
  • Route 1/South Roxbury Mill Road (LOS E in the p.m. peak)
