A Small Diameter Single Lane Roundabout
Several factors went into the decision to move forward with the small single lane roundabout:
- It improves safety for all road users (vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists).
- The roundabout fits within the exiting intersection footprint minimizing impacts to adjacent properties including the Conrad Mansion, Woodland Park and multiple single family homes.
- It is a cost-effective investment that will last far into the future. The roundabout will efficiently handle traffic volumes for the next 20 years without additional investments.
A public open house was held on October 28, 2019 and based on feedback received, most people agreed the intersection needs improving to make is safer. Not everyone agreed on the solution. MDT and the City of Kalispell understand that not everyone supports a roundabout and many have concerns about having to stop on the Conrad Drive hill during icy conditions. It is important to note that the roundabout has been designed specifically for this location. The city will also make this route a priority for winter maintenance.
