Woodland and 2nd Street / Conrad Intersection ImprovementsVirtual Workshop

Welcome!

Welcome to the on-line Open House

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and the City of Kalispell evaluated options to improve the intersection of 2nd Street East/Conrad Drive and Woodland Avenue. The City of Kalispell has seen 15.7% population growth between 2010 and 2017. It is no surprise that this intersection has seen an increase in vehicular, pedestrian and bicycle traffic. The increase in traffic paired with the unusual traffic pattern of allowing westbound traffic coming up the Conrad Drive hill to continue through the intersection without stopping, while the other 3 legs must stop, is resulting in more crashes. It also makes it difficult for pedestrians and bicycles to navigate the intersection.

The goals of this project are to:

  • Improve safety
  • Maintain a 25 MPH speed limit
  • Minimize impacts to adjacent properties including historic properties
  • Improve the pedestrian and bicycle environment
  • Accommodate school buses and emergency service vehicles

MDT has determined that the safest and most efficient way to reduce the number and severity of crashes to use a small single-lane roundabout. You can explore the roundabout design by clicking on the image below. Additionally in each "room" (or tabs located on the top of this page) you will find more information about the project including a video of what it looks like with vehicles and people moving through the intersection. Please tell your friends and neighbors about this site so we can hear from them before the virtual open house closes on October 2, 2020.
